    Preventing OA

What can we do to prevent OA; and why this is so important

Canine osteoarthritis is a, if not the, leading cause of elective euthanasia in the UK, afflicting the dog for the longest and causing the most severe clinical signs of all common complaints seen in first opinion practice.

Now labelled a welfare concern alongside obesity and dental disease; but a household name, overlooked and accepted.

Every owner wishes their dog to have a comfortable full and long life so how can we achieve this with osteoarthritis being a key candidate preventing this.

This webinar looks at the underlying causes of OA, and strategies we can employ to minimise its prevalence:

    • Be able to recite the current figures of OA in dogs in the UK
    • Understand the dominant aetiologies behind OA
    • Review simply pathophysiology of the disease
    • Note key influences in the development and progression
    • Be able to direct your clients to evidence based reliable resources

The Emotional Experience: Changing perspectives on behaviour

Andrew Hale Bsc ISCP.Dip.Canine.Prac brings the emotional experience lens to look at how we see behaviour in companion animals, with a particular focus on dogs. A big part of the emotional experience is the ability to communicate the need to feel safe, and Andrew will introduce the Safety-First Protocol to highlight this.

The Safety-First Protocol consists of three foundations to feeling safe: Processing, Engagement and Exit. We will go through each of these and why they are important when helping animals (and caregivers) navigate the world around them.

Andrew will also look at the importance of mood states, and the role of optimism bias in relation to feeling safe.
